"How can I get my kids to cooperate without feeling like a drill sergeant?"
In fact, this is quite a normal experience for most moms and families! It can be stressful to wrangle all the kids, worry about mismatched socks - oh, and now there's toothpaste all over his shirt. Nice.
Whether you're preparing for your first session or a seasoned pro at family portraits, a little preparation can make all the difference. That’s why I’ve put together these five fool-proof strategies to help make your next session stress-free and fun!
HINT: These tips also work for older kids, too!
1. Bribe them (the right way!)
Let's be real - kids love rewards! Since kids aren't always intrinsically motivated (especially when it feels like something is an obligation to them), they're more likely to push back. But if there's a reward at the end of the tunnel? They'll do just about anything for you!
Incentives like their favorite snack, a small toy, or a fun activity after the session can work wonders to keep them motivated.
Photographer's Tip: Mini marshmallows are a great option! They're mess-free, easy to hide in photos, and tasty.
Keep it positive by framing it as a treat, not a bargain. "You've been so awesome today, let's celebrate with [reward]!"
2. Avoid threats; focus on encouragement
Think about it - when someone threatens you, how do you feel? I'm guessing something in your gut makes you want to avoid the situation at all costs.
With something as emotionally-invested like family photos, it can be natural for there to be push-back (from all family members involved!).
Instead of threats, which can create tension and resistance, shift the focus to encouragement!
Photographer's Tip: Compliment their smiles, or share how excited you are to show off how good they'll look in their photos!
Kids often reflect our moods. If we stay upbeat and patient, they're more likely to follow suit.
3. Practice following directions with fun games
Family photo sessions often involve lots of instructions like "stand here" or "hold hands." If you think your kids might struggle with these tasks, practice these ahead of time using games like Simon Says or Red Light/Green light!
Photographer's Tip: Most of my sessions with kids focus on fun, game-like prompts rather than static posing! These make for the most fluid, natural photos that you'll enjoy for years to come.
Playing some of these games ahead of time can help prepare kids for what to expect, easing some of the nerves they might feel during the day of your session.
4. Practice BIG smiles!
Have you ever noticed how awkward forced smiles can look? To help your kids relax into more natural smiles, practice different smiles at home!
Photographer's Tip: Try games where they show you their "cheesiest grin," "silliest face," or "biggest laugh." Genuine laughter often creates the best smiles for the camera!
Join the fun by showing them your exaggerated smile! Kids are more likely to feel comfortable when they see you having fun too.
5. Have fun!
A stress-free session is all about fun! Whether it's telling jokes, singing songs, or playing games like peek-a-boo, keeping the energy light and playful ensures kids stay engaged!
Older kids might even enjoy coming up with silly poses for the family!
Photographer's Tip: Share your kids' favorite jokes, games, or songs with your photographer so they can build rapport with your kiddos during the session.
Games make everything more fun!
You got this, mama!
Family photo sessions don't need to feel overwhelming. By incorporating these tips, you can create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for your family.
Remember: it's not about achieving perfection - it's about celebrating your family as they are, right now.
